Home > Our National Career Centre

The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to an economic future for Nigeria and its people which is underpinned by higher value-added jobs, enhancements to productivity and competitiveness, increased skill levels and improved participation in education and training. This commitment was recently demonstrated by the Federal Ministry of Education through the accreditation of Workforce Management Centre to set up a National Career Centre.

The efficient use of human capital in successful modern economies relies on the management, development and use of skills and competencies.

Ensuring that individuals have the skills relevant to future employment opportunities is one of the key drivers to achieving the Economic Vision and the National Career Centre is the main vehicle through which this will be delivered.

To ensure it delivers on its mandate, Workforce National Career Centre as put in place an overarching framework for the development of skills of the Nigerian Workforce.  Our skills development framework highlights our strategic intent to focus on the following critical issues:

    • Raising the skills of the current workforce in Nigeria;
    • Enhancing the ‘knowledge base’ of those entering the Nigerian workforce; and
    • Addressing the employability skills of those currently not in employment in the country

We have identified four different types of skills that we need to make available on a large scale indeed across all the geopolitical regions in Nigeria as follows:

    • The essential skills of literacy and numeracy
    • Information and communications technology (ICT);
    • Employability skills, including the key skills of team working, problem solving, innovation, attitude, project management, communications and Personal Effectiveness, etc, and;
    • Work-based skills, specific to a particular occupation or sector.

The National Career Centre concept is a human resource strategy designed to improve economic efficiency, to reduce labour market failures, to respond to technological and economic change, and to enable Nigeria and Nigerian Workforce to compete effectively in global markets; as well as help address social equity, access, and democratisation by making citizens equally aware of opportunities. These are our aims and objectives.
